A hiphop perspective

This film takes a look into the world of politics through a hip-hop lens. It follows the American hip-hop movement from the 80’s to present. Through the voices of the hip-hop community issues such as the war on drugs, Regan presidency, crack epidemic, racial profiling, patriot act, censorship, police brutality, poverty, the industrial prison complex and many other political issues were discussed in relation to their impact on hip-hop.

The underlying inter-connecting issue throughout the film is racism and stereotypes. As it follows American politics it looks at the way hip-hop has been used for those marginalized and oppressed by the racist politic system to have their voices and stories heard and make a difference. It also looks into the current control that corporations and companies have over hip-hop music and how that has contributed to (mainstream) hip-hop loosing its political voice. It explores how companies have used hip-hop culture, which originated as a resistance to inequalities, to advertise as a way to make money that in turn maintains inequalities.

The film presented many issues that I have previously read, studied and heard about however, looking at it through a hip-hop perspective gave me new insight and a broader perspective on many of the issues.

PYF: A trip to Tahiti, but what else would it be?

tahitian girl dancersI boarded the tiny plane in Westport on July 14, nervous and unprepared. I hadn’t even read half of the information we’d been sent. I was excited to finally get a chance to go overseas, but by this stage I had convinced myself it was going to be terrible. They wouldn’t feed me enough (I like food), the people would be super brainy and super snobbish (how could a little West Coast girl ever compete?), not to mention old (I’m only 18 and the people going were aged from 16-30), and I’d get lost (the amount of youth going to the festival was more than the population of my entire town)!

Then as I munched the delicious chocolate chip airplane cookie I suddenly changed my mind (I’m funny like that). The Pacific Youth Festival will be great, I told myself.

And you know what? It was.

nicole and lyndon's presentationI was immediately welcomed by the 16 other New Zealanders at our one-day workshop in Auckland on the 15th (they weren’t mean after all). And I soon realised I was the only one who was feeling nervous and ill-prepared. And I was one of the youngest people there, but it never became an issue. We all came from different backgrounds, and different parts of the country, but here we were all equal.

We boarded the plane to Tahiti the next day and I discovered something better than airplane cookies - airplane socks!

Up to 1000 youth from around the Pacific (plus three from a youth organisation in France - yes France at a PACIFIC festival, proving how much control they still have in the country) were present for the six day festival. Our goal was to create the first Pacific Charter (a task that proved even more difficult than first imagined).

Our first day was spent exploring Pape’ete, the capital of French Polynesia, and then we got straight into it on Monday morning with the opening ceremony. The most inspiring part of that for me wasn’t in any of the speeches, but was seeing New Caledonia’s refusal to march under the French flag. It was something that became the big topic of the festival, even though originally the organisers tried hard to avoid the topic altogether - decolonisation (which, put very briefly, is the process in which a colony gains independence from a colonial power).

We attended conferences, workshops, and seminars focusing on the different themes of the festival including good governance, peace, education, cultural diversity, health, active citizenship, globalisation, equality, and sustainable development. We also watched cultural performances, had dinner and a dance at the Parliament, spent a recreational day on the island of Mo’orea, and sang - a lot!

Unfortunately, New Zealand wasn’t able to perform a cultural presentation. A lack of time to practise (and the fact we hadn’t met before the trip, let alone performed together) , a lack of indigenous people in the delegation (decreasing the authenticity of the performance), and the debate over what we would perform (Maori or Moriori - and what particular songs or dances) were to blame. The lack of performance is something I hope is rectified in time for the next Pacific Youth Festival in Fiji in 2009.

A variety of culture was everywhere. On the stage, in the fashion, in conversation. And learning about it all was incredible: seeing Samoan men in skirts (and looking good in them), learning about the history of islands like Rapanui (Easter Island), Marshall and Norfolk from the people who lived there, hearing Tongan men praising the attractiveness of bigger-sized women over stick-thin figures (image conscious people take note!), and practising Tahitian songs.

Language barriers were daunting at first, but we soon found there were other ways to communicate than just talking. Though we did do a lot of talking - and I think that’s where people learned the most, in general conversation at the meal table (where the food wasn’t all that bad), or outside our accommodation with a guitar or ukelele or some kind of instrument in hand.

A clear highlight for many (myself included) was the “Decolonisation with Justice” workshop organised by two Kiwis on the last day. It was a chance to finally talk about the effects of colonisation in our respective countries, something that many people hadn’t been allowed to talk about before. Colonisation had affected practically every Pacific Island nation, including New Zealand (the European and Māori conflict anyone?). The importance of keeping native languages and cultures alive and in practise featured heavily in many workshops along with the problems islanders faced in achieving that because of colonisation. Even in our host country, French Polynesia, the Maohi (native Tahitians), grew up unable to speak their own language because of the disapproval from the occupying French. The same thing happened to the Māori in New Zealand when the English arrived, showing that New Zealand faced many of the same issues as other Pacific Island nations and our place at the festival was certainly justified.

NZ delegationAnother highlight was meeting three Moriori youth from New Zealand. I never learned anything about the Moriori people at school. All I knew was something about “the Moriori being eaten by the Māori”… It was interesting learning about how the Moriori were still very much alive and the efforts being made to resurrect their language and culture. Their fight to rectify the shame people felt in being identified as Moriori (even more than Māori, Moriori people in the past were looked down upon and forced to hide or forget their culture) was incredibly inspiring.

While being saturated in culture during the festival was amazing and inspiring, it also became a kind of lowlight as it made me start to ask myself “what is my culture?” As a New Zealand European/Pakeha I felt out of place at the festival without a culture of my own that I could share, and I’m sure I wasn’t the only one from Australasia who felt that way.

Even though I didn’t understand everything that was going on, I felt comfortable there. By the end of the festival I didn’t want to leave. I learned more in one week about culture, respect and love than I did in all my years at primary and secondary school. The Pacific Youth Festival wasn’t just a trip to Tahiti, it was also an experience I’ll never forget.

  • Write articles to newspapers and magazines about Pacific Issues.
  • Make changes to led a more sustainable life (recycling is a good way to start) and encourage others to do the same.
  • Get involved with an organisation or group working on Pacific Issues (like Just Focus!)
  • Encourage an end to stereotypes and racism (not all Pacific Islanders wear grass skirts and live off coconuts…)

PYF - first thoughts

women at the pacific youth festivalOver 1000 young people aged 16-30 attended the first Pacific Youth Festival held in Pape’ete in Tahiti from 17-22 July 2006. Aotearoa NZ had a delegation of 16 people (from the North and South islands, and the Chathams) , 8 of whom were selected by Just Focus to participate at our first international event.

Between April and July they all looked into ways to get sponsorship to cover the cost of the registration fee and flights, and JF also went hard on the fundraising to be able to help out with some extra $$.

The group worked together before the event to learn about the 9 themes which were the topics of the Festival.

Just Focus held a one day workshop in Auckland the day before departure, and invited the entire delegation to come and spend the day and night together.

We played games to get to know each other, as well as doing the serious stuff of preparing for what would happen while we were away and discussing the issues.

The Festival was a mix of workshops (run by young people from the various countries) and speeches by adults working in the areas cvered by the festival. Eva from Just Focus and Annie from the Peace Foundation ran a workshop on Peace, and Char and Omar from JF facilitated a discussion on “Decolonisation with Justice”. Both sessions got rave reviews and made it into the local newspapers!

There was a lof discussion about the many issues, including HIV/AIDS, the problems young people across the Pacific have in finding good jobs, sustainable development, and other issues which impact on the Pacific region.

In the evenings there were amazing cultural performances - traditional dances and music from all across the Pacific, from Rapanui (Easter Island) to Fiji to Melanesia and Polynesia.

All in all, we spent 9 days in Pape’ete, staying at a local school (sharing a classroom as our dorm, with mattresses on the floor!). The conference lasted 6 days, including a fantastic day off when we all went across the water on the ferry to stunningly beautiful Mo’orea where we spent the day at the beach just chilling out!

The other days were mostly spent talking, relaxing, shopping and lying on the beach - catching some of the Tahitian sunshine before heading home to winter!

There will be lots of articles to come from the JF gang, but in the meantime, while they are still busy reflecting and writing up their thoughts and experiences, here’s a few comments to give you a flavour of how they found it:

Partying up at Parihaka

When I first heard about volunteering for the Parihaka festival I had no real idea of what it might entail. It sounded like a good idea — a chance to hear a lot of really good bands in one place — so, with two of my friends from school, we packed our bags and headed up from Wellington to Taranaki.

All I knew about Parihaka was a little of the history, so I was really amazed at the stunning setting of the festival — tucked into a sheltered valley, with Mount Taranaki huge and beautiful in the background.

We were greeted with great friendliness and the cultural experience over the next three days was one none of us had ever experienced before — and one that we really enjoyed. Because there was a much smaller turnout than expected, and because so many people were keen to volunteer, we didn’t end up having to do anything. We kept pestering people and asking them if we could help — but, in the end, we were forced to relax and listen to the music!

The stalls and different organisations there covered an interesting range of viewpoints and issues, and I reckon people were pretty impressed with the Global Education Centre stall! It was really great to see so many different kinds of people helping out and enjoying the wonderful atmosphere. It felt like how New Zealand could be — and should be — if people learned to respect each other and to embrace the unique lessons the Māori culture can teach us all.

I would be lying if I didn’t admit that the music was the highlight though (!) — especially the 40 hour techno-tent. The roots and reggae were also amazing. It was disappointing that there weren’t more people there, but hopefully next time people will have heard how great it was and there will be better attendance. It’s the kind of festival I can see growing and improving every time.


All three of us thoroughly recommend this festival to everyone — whether you want to go with your friends or family, you won’t regret it.

Taking back their rights

Rapped the middle aged Reverend Mua Strickson-Pua to an audience of about six hundred, mostly young people, at the Auckland Town Hall. The occasion was a public rally against youth rates and low wages, and in support of the Unite! Unions workers mostly young and mostly Polynesian who will be taking strike action in the coming months to end youth rates and gain a $12 minimum wage and secure hours in their contracts.

The concert was part of the supersizemypay.com campaign, which aims to bring together a broad coalition of social justice groups and the labour movement to put public and political pressure on the government and employers to live up to three demands-a $12 minimum wage, an end to youth rates and secure hours.

It must have been one of the most diverse line-ups ever to grace the town halls stage in a long time. Speakers like the Green Party’s Sue Bradford and the Maori Party’s Pita Sharples alternated with musical acts like Olmecha Supreme, NZ Idol Rosita Vai and Auckland Ska Band Geneva.

The concert proved that the campaign for workers rights in the fast food industry had come along way from International Workers Day, when Radical Youth stormed Starbucks and then occupied McDonalds, shutting down Queen Street and resulting in twenty arrests, including of Tearaway Journalist Cameron Walker, for taking photos of police making brutal arrests. The occupation and subsequent arrests proved the inspiration for a public rally against youth rates in the weeks before the election, which brought together the Green Party, Unite! Union and Child Poverty Action Group, three of the main participants in the supersizemypay.com campaign against youth rates. The supersizemypay.com campaign has gone from strength to strength, with many strikes, pickets and a media conference raising the issue in the national arena.

It was inspiring to see so many young people involved in taking back their rights at work. Firstly, there were the Unite! members, like Nick, the worlds first Starbucks worker to go on strike, who were taking back their rights to a living wage and freedom from age discrimination in youth rates. Secondly, there were the McDonalds workers like Mele and Meleane Manumoa who were taking back their rights to fight for a fair wage even after they were threatened with legal action from one of the world’s biggest corporations.

The public rally showed that youth do have rights and if they join together and fight for them they can win. One Starbucks worker told the crowd that they were fighting a culture of apathy, but said she believed that together we could overcome that apathy. And she’s right, because if we want to make poverty history we first need to do it in our own backyard. Possibly the most pressing reminder from the concert was Sharples reminding the crowd of Nelson Mandela’s words, “Like slavery and apartheid, poverty is not natural. It is man-made and it can be overcome and eradicated by the actions of human beings.”

Identity and advertising

Identity — it’s so hot right now! No, but really, it’s huge, especially in the teen years as you develop a sense of who you are, what is important and where you belong.

But what is identity?
Identity is what makes you the fabulous unique person that you are! It’s the combination of lots of influences like: cultural and national identity, friends and whanau, values and religion, discrimination and stereotyping; gender and sexual preference and the influences of society, the media and advertising.

Most of these influences make sense, but one that we don’t often think about is how the media and advertising influence global youth culture’.

Branded Identity

While situations for young people around the world are very different, there is one dominant youth culture. That culture is created, presented and sold to us every day. It’s the one you see in ads, music clips and in heaps of images.

This is a culture presented by marketers. It is inaccurate, it is often negative and it keeps changing. You need to keep your finger on the pulse, keep doing new things and buying new things to keep up with it.

Ponder these stats:
US teens spend US$100B a year, and their parents spend another US$50B a year on them.

The average young person in Aotearoa New Zealand sees 20,000 TV ads a year!

That means youth markets are worth big bucks and companies need to be able to see to you. But that’s hard! You are so damn cool and what is cool changes all the time.

An effective technique used by advertisers is to combine products with image so you are not just buying a drink or phone, you’re buying an identity.
“Boost understands that brands are an integral part of today’s youth identity. Boost customers purchase more than pay-as-you-go mobile phones and services; they buy an experience. Everything we do is purposeful, meaningful and consistent with the aspirations of young people.” — from Boost Mobile site:
Brands are mentioned by artists in heaps of songs — to show wealth or poverty or just to express the things that are part of people’s everyday reality or desires.
According to US company American Brandstand there has been a rise in the mention of not only clothing labels but cars, soft drinks and weapons.
The winner of most brand-dropping in 2004 was Kayne West, who mentioned 19 brands in his 4 singles of 2004. He beat 2003 winner 50 CENT.
Record labels often charge to have brands appear in Music Clips but up til now artists haven’t been paid when they mention a product in the lyrics of their songs. That has changed though.
In 2005, McDonalds offered to pay MCs between US$1-$5 each time a song which mentions Big Macs is on the radio!

Seagrams Gin got put into 5 raps in 2004 the same way. This included Petey Pablo’s “Freek-a-leek” with the lyrics: “Now I got to give a shout out to Seagram’s Gin/Cause I’m drinkin’ it and they payin’ me for it.”

So, what impact does it have?
Scary but true: brands and advertising help to define us. While it’s not the only thing that affects us, it does affect us all.

Advertising is based on the desire to be something you are not and something that is probably not real. These false images can cause:

  • Low self esteem
  • Eating disorders
  • Extreme stereotypes
  • Confused images of people in different countries
  • Spending cash you just don’t have!
  • Being defined by someone else!

What Can I do?
We have a responsibility to look critically and redefine ourselves.
You don’t have to reject everything that is cool and buy everything from the op-shop to fight against this influence.

You can start by being aware: of what is being pushed and of your own consumption. See the image of youth that is being packaged and sold to you and choose for yourself how you define your identity: individually, as a community and globally…

Music and Censorship

Music is everywhere. On that radio over there, on TV, in that car driving past… so imagine if the only song you could hear from any of these was something everyone agreed was safe’ enough. Something without swear words or any references to violence or sex — like Hi 5. Shudder.

Welcome to a world of music censorship, a subject that can get a lot of people very, very angry. Music is expression. Ideas, beliefs, and opinions are all set to a catchy tune.

Banning music, then, is banning expression and freedom of speech, and censoring lyrics is saying: I liked your first line — I really did - but I’ve changed the rest. It just wasn’t doing it for me, and that reference to holding hands? A bit too racy for teenage audiences I’m afraid’.

So in a perfect world there would be no censorship. You could play, write and listen to whatever you want. Everyone is so over the controversy of Eminem, after all.

When is it justified?
In some cases, music censorship does have justification. Several reggae stars have been dropped from UK’s MOBO Awards because of their anti-gay lyrics, and the potential violent backlash it could’ve had.

Even more disturbing is the possible influences that white supremacist rock n’ roll (thankfully, a very small genre) may have — one distributor’s website featured an ad for a computer game called Ethnic Cleansing (violence for the whole family!). Hardly among the top 10 ways for making the world a better place.

Violent music breeds violent behaviour. Or maybe it works the other way around — certain types of music attract certain types of people, and censorship really wouldn’t make that much of a difference.

One thing is for certain: music has a huge impact on our lives. If it is necessary for some albums or songs to be banned, the lines between what makes it hate speech or justifies it as political expression are easily blurred.

In 2004, for example, when the Dixie Chicks announced they were ashamed that George Bush came from Texas, radio stations stopped playing their songs until they apologised. A slap on the hand for being unpatriotic or an obvious curbing of freedom of speech?

With a society so reliant on Internet culture, perhaps censorship will become ineffective anyway — what the shop won’t let you buy, you can download online and save yourself some cash.

So, music censorship: either a necessary part of our society or an obstruction to freedom of speech. You decide.
