NZ INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL
July to November 2008, around the country

Visit the NZ Film Festival site for info on what is on where, and keep an eye out for films with global themes. There is a particularly strong field of films about sustainable living, eco-communities and environmental issues, including Garbage Warrior , Earth, Pete Seeger; The Power Of Song and Sharkwater. G8 SUMMIT
7 - 9 July 2008

The 34th G8 summit is to take place in Japan. The leaders of the 8 most powerful nations will meet to discuss various issues and it will almost certainly attract a large number of protestors. For background info check out Wikipedia’s entry on the 34th Summit and you can visit the official G8 site to keep up with what’s being discussed.
 
 
WORLD POPULATION DAY
July 11

World Population Day draws attention to population issues like gender equality, reproductive health and sustainable development This year the United Nations Population Fund has chosen the theme ‘Men at Work‘ or men’s involvement in women’s lives. This can be as a father, husband, employer, or community leader. In many situations men have a great influence in women’s lives and this year World Population Day is focusing on ensuring that these influences are positive ones. TE WIKI O TE REO MĀORI 2008 - MĀORI LANGUAGE WEEK
21 - 27 July 2008

Te Wiki o te Reo Māori provides a time for special events to celebrate and promote the Māori language. The theme this year is ‘Te Reo i te Kāinga - Māori Language in the Home.’ Watch out for the special ‘Kōrero Māori - Give it a go!’ booklet later this year that will support you to kōrero Māori at home. GLOBAL YOUTH ENCOUNTER: MAKING PEACE A REALITY
Te Maungarongo Marae, Ohope, 18-20 July; Camp Wainui, Wellington, 25-27 July; Cracroft Centre, Christchurch, 1-3 August 2008

The Christian World Service are bringing together young people form Sri Lanka, East Timor, the Solomon Islands, Fiji and Australia who have lived through or are living with conflict to share their stories and to help us think about what is happening around us and to find ways to work for peace. The weekend workshop will be a fun and challenging to learn, share stories and develop new skills.

SHIP FOR WORLD YOUTH - DON’T MISS THE BOAT!!
Deadline for applications: 5pm Wednesday 6 August 2008

The Ship for World Youth is a unique international youth exchange programme run and sponsored by the Cabinet Office of the Government of Japan. Approximately 140 foreign young people from 12 countries and 120 young people from Japan live together on board the ship for 42 days and broaden their perspectives through various seminars, sports events and workshops.
Young people between the ages of 18-30 are invited to apply for a placement on the Ship for World Youth programme. Check out the Ministry of Youth Development website for all the info and to download an application form.
 
 
INTERNATIONAL DAY OF THE WORLD’S INDIGENOUS PEOPLE
August 9

There are an estimated 370 million indigenous people in more than 70 countries worldwide. Despite their cultural differences, the various groups of indigenous peoples around the world share common difficulties, which include lack of basic healthcare, limited access to education, loss of control over land, abject poverty, displacement, human rights violations, and economic and social marginalization. Indigenous people are arguably among the most disadvantaged and vulnerable groups of people in the world today. By celebrating International Day for the World’s Indigenous People, the international community recognizes that special measures are required to protect their rights. The day also seeks to strengthen international cooperation in solving problems faced by indigenous people. For more info visit the United Nations Permanent Forum of Indigenous Peoples website.
 
 
INTERNATIONAL YOUTH DAY

The theme for this year’s International Youth Day is Youth and Climate Change Time for Action.
