NZ INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL
July to November 2008, around the country

Visit the NZ Film Festival site for info on what is on where, and keep an eye out for films with global themes. There is a particularly strong field of films about sustainable living, eco-communities and environmental issues, including Garbage Warrior , Earth, Pete Seeger; The Power Of Song and Sharkwater. AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL SEMINAR SERIES

The University of Canterbury, supported by Amnesty International, is offering a seminar series to celebrate the 60th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights The seminars run 7.30 – 9.00pm and cost $10.

THE NUCLEAR COMEBACK AT REEL EARTH: AOTEAROA ENVIRONMENTAL FILM FESTIVAL

Nuclear nightmares or daydreams? The Reel Earth film festival features 3 films on the topic of Nuclear power. ‘Children of the Armaggedon’, ‘The Nuclear Comeback’ and ‘No Nukes is Good Nukes!’ Follow the link for the full schedule on these and many other environmental films showing in Featherston, Greytown and Wellington.

YOUNG PEOPLE’S REFERENCE GROUP
Applications close Friday, 28 November

Are you a young person who is active in your community, aware of the world around you and passionate about having your say on issues that affect you? Then you might want to join the Children’s Commissioner’s Young People’s Reference Group.

The current Young People’s Reference Group (YPRG) is completing its two year term and the Children’s Commissioner is looking for talented 12 to 16 year olds to apply to join the group for the next term. HUMAN RIGHTS DAY – 10 DECEMBER

All sorts of events will be happening around New Zealand to celebrate the 60th anniversary of The Declaration of Human Rights.

‘Write for rights’ is the event where you can get together to with others to take part in a Write-a-thon. Just email olivia.rope@amnesty.org.nz for details.

The conference ‘Celebrating 60 years of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights’ will not only look at New Zealand’s human rights efforts over the past few decades but hope to identify key human rights challenges for the future. PARIHAKA INTERNATIONAL PEACE FESTIVAL 2009
9-11 January 2009, Parihaka - Taranaki

The theme for Parihaka 09 is ‘Peace Justice and Eco Responsibility’. As well as 28 bands including Kora, Little Bushman, Katchafire, Olmecha Supreme, and House Of Shem there will be Healing, Speakers, Film, Eco Forums, and the ‘Tamaariki/Kidzone’ and Dance Zone.

Special interactive performance/workshops aimed specifically at young people will be facilitated by leading performance artists. Camping and a ‘golf cart shuttle service’ for the really tired will also be available. Cheap tickets of $10 for anyone aged 0-16 years can be purchased if you go with an adult.

PARACHUTE FESTIVAL 09
23-26 January, Hamilton

“Peace, justice and rock ‘n roll” - 4 days and 150 artists will make up the southern hemisphere’s biggest Christian music festival. The all-star line-up includes Atlanta crunk rockers Family Force 5, alt-worship revolutionists David Crowder Band, Kutless, Casting Crowns as well as our own national treasure Dave Dobbyn.

Alongside music genres ranging from Pacifika and Urban Soul to Alt/Indie, will be speakers, a short film fest, late night comedy, village markets, a skate park, an over 40’s tea party, paintball, an 80’s disco, a Kiwiana party and child sponsorship. Camping facilities are available as well as a unique system of sponsoring others to attend. To find out more go to the parachute music website.
