Good Times and Goat Testes
Alex Dalzell, who is in his final year at Otago Medical School, Wellington, has recently returned from a six week placement at a hospital in Qui Nhon, Vietnam, Alex shares some of his experiences with us.
The dinner out last night was good. Vien Vinh (the orthopaedics boss man, head of department chap) and his son, and also Phuong the registrar came along. The restaurant served goat. I don’t know if there was anything else on the menu but they only ordered goat.
1) Steamed goat wrapped in leaves
2) Goat cubes grilled on a skewer
3) Raw goat cured in lemon and chilli
4) Rice and goat soup
5) Something else with goat but my memory is starting to get hazy by this point.
And then of course there is the wine.
1) Goat Teste wine - standard rough rice white spirit which had been allowed to mature with a set of goat nads in it. This turns the spirit a bit yellow and imparts the goats virility to those who drink it. Watch out - I am now as horny as a goat.
2) Goat Blood wine - rice spirit mixed with goat blood till the colour of a cab sav. Also flavoured with quite a lot of ginger and I tried not to retch too much as I drank it cause the ginger made it almost unbearable. Good for cleaning the blood apparently.
We went to a tea house after this. A really nice place with soft music and full on bowls of tea with all sorts of stuff steeping away - tree bark, Chinese apple, leaves of god knows what. And we ate some little cake type things. All in all it was a good night and the guys have decided to take me out tripping around on Sunday cause my VISA has stuffed up. Should be good times.
