A Med-Student’s Guide to Vietnamese Cuisine

Things are ticking along pretty well here. There is a good crew of NZ VSA folk about here who often drop into the backpackers for a beer in the evenings. I haven’t been out to see too many sites here. Just working and eating really, and sleeping a lot in the daytime. I have had one really good seafood meal of prawns and crab and squid that was damn good. But for most meals it has been the noodles that are everywhere and pretty good. Also rice, definitely second string to noodles, but not to be forgotten. The French also left their legacy here in the form of little French bread sticks - about the size of a hand-span and you can buy them for about 10 cents.
The beer (bia) is everywhere and dirt cheap - the cheapest local brew is about 30-40 cents a bottle. All beer is served with ice chunks in it. Or they bring warm beers to the table and a bucket of big ice chunks that you put in your glass.
