Members of the General Assembly voted to declare clean, safe, affordable drinking water and sanitation a ‘fundamental human right’. The resolution came in the wake of the fact that 884m people have no access to safe drinking water and more than 2.6bn lack access to basic sanitation.
The Assembly resolution received 122 votes in favour and zero votes against, while 41 countries abstained from voting. Aotearoa New Zealand was one of the astaining countries.
