The Climate Kiwis – five youth ambassadors aged 15-17 from Whangarei, Auckland, Rotorua and Nelson - will represent you at the UN Children’s Climate Forum in Copenhagen next month. They need you to vote on the future of New Zealand travel and how we can reduce our carbon footprint
The young ambassadors chose transport as the hot topic for the Copenhagen climate talks because it makes a massive contribution to New Zealand’s greenhouse gas emissions. If we change the way we travel, we can reduce our emissions and help tackle climate change
For example, did you know that New Zealand has the highest car ownership rate in the world, and one of the lowest driving ages?
We expect to be able to get to work, school, or see our friends in our car – but we need to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions too. The Climate Kiwis have designed three scenarios for the future of New Zealand travel, and they are asking you to vote on which one you think is best.
Don’t miss this opportunity to make your voice heard at the Copenhagen Climate Change talks! Cast your vote today at the online voting station. It closes at midday on Wednesday 18th November.
Once the votes are in, the Climate Kiwis will represent your views to the Children’s Climate Forum in Copenhagen from 24th November – 5th December. They will then make recommendations to world leaders at the Copenhagen climate change talks, so it is really important that as many young New Zealanders as possible get to have their say.
“It is important for young people from the South Pacific to have a voice at this international forum” says UNICEF New Zealand International Advocacy Manager, Sarah Morris. “They are the generation that will inherit the Earth, and will be the ones to live with the consequences of climate change”.
The Climate Kiwis are being supported by UNICEF NZ in partnership with EnviroChallenge a high-school education for sustainability programme.
