Some 90 million of these guns exist - and they do not die when their owners do. They are now made in dozens of countries and have been fired in hundreds of conflicts since their introduction. In contrast, campaigns round the world are removing guns from gangs and communities. As they are recycled and made into sculptures might the Kalashnikov one day be seen as a symbol of peace?
